Reviews for T'Shan Williams in The Life at Southwark Playhouse 04.04.2017

Cy Coleman's gritty and heartfelt musical The Life opened yesterday at Southwark Playhouse with T'Shan Williams in the lead role of Queen. The production originated on Broadway in 1997 winning both Tony and Drama Desks awards.

T'Shan has captivated theatre critics with her performance in the UK premiere of the musical:

'We meet Queen from Savannah (played with a lovely soprano that is pure and strong with a faint frost hovering on its surface by the excellent T'Shan Williams)' - The Independent

‘…there are some top-notch, heartfelt and gutsy performances, from Clarke and also Williams, who can hit a high note and has quite a future in front of her.’ - The Times

‘There’s also a glorious new discovery in T'Shan Williams, longing for an escape from it all’ - The Stage

‘She's (Sharon D. Clarke) matched by T'Shan Williams as Queenie’ - London Theatre

'It is Williams’ portrayal of Queen's self-belief that drives the show. Her relative youth belying an ability to play a desperately damaged, vulnerable woman who's struggling to make her life work. Vocally Williams is a dream too, holding sensational notes with a range that is at times spine-tingling.' - London News Online
